Join us as we explore the remarkable journey of women in the cannabis world, from the past to the present and into the future. It's a celebration of their influence and an opportunity to learn from their experiences.
The history of women in the realm of cannabis is as rich and diverse as the plant itself. From ancient cultures to modern times, women have played a pivotal role in the cultivation, innovation, and advocacy of cannabis. This narrative is not just about plants and products; it's a story of resilience, healing, and empowerment.
Women's connection with cannabis dates back to ancient times, serving medicinal, spiritual, and textile purposes. In ancient China and Egypt, women were likely involved in the plant's cultivation and consumption, using it for a variety of health issues, including those related to women's health.
Noteworthy historical figures have also marked their presence:
-
Hildegard von Bingen detailed the medicinal uses of cannabis in the Middle Ages, showcasing an early understanding of its benefits.
- Queen Isabel of Castile's support of New World explorations facilitated the global spread of cannabis, integrating it into new economies and cultures.
- Queen Victoria reportedly used cannabis extracts to alleviate menstrual cramps, supported by her royal physician, signaling early medical endorsement.
- Hatshepsut, the formidable pharaoh, may have overseen the cultivation and application of medicinal plants, including cannabis, during her reign.
- Margaret Mead, the pioneering anthropologist, advocated for marijuana legalization before Congress in 1969, emphasizing its sociocultural benefits and the need for responsible use and research.
The legacy of women in cannabis extends to modern advocates who have broken barriers and led reforms in what was traditionally a male-dominated field. The recent decades have seen a surge of influential women advocating for cannabis reform, entrepreneurship, and scientific research, further shaping the industry's landscape.
-
Mary Jane Rathbun: Also known as "Brownie Mary," became an iconic figure in the medical marijuana movement by providing cannabis-infused brownies to AIDS patients, advocating for medical cannabis legalization and patient rights.
- Dr. Sue Sisley: A leading figure in clinical research on cannabis, Dr. Sisley's work focuses on the potential benefits of cannabis for treating PTSD and other conditions. Her research efforts challenge the stigma surrounding medicinal cannabis use and push for evidence-based policy changes.
- Wanda James: Notably the first African American woman to own a cannabis dispensary in the U.S., Wanda James is a powerful advocate for social justice and addressing racial disparities in cannabis-related legal issues. Her work emphasizes the importance of diversity and equity within the cannabis industry.
- Tiffany Bowden: Co-founder of the Minority Cannabis Business Association, Bowden champions diversity and inclusion, advocating for minority representation and equity in the cannabis industry. Her efforts are crucial in addressing the social and economic impacts of cannabis criminalization on minority communities.
- Anna Willey: Initially making her mark in Colorado, Willey's venture into cannabis cultivation led her to become one of the most respected growers upon her return. Her journey, marked by pioneering a leading cannabis brand and navigating through significant challenges, illustrates her resilience and dedication to quality. Now back in her starting ground, Willey continues to influence the cannabis community with her expertise and commitment to excellence, highlighting the importance of persistence and innovation in the ever-evolving cannabis landscape.
The narrative of women in cannabis has evolved to include not just the pioneers who laid the groundwork for the industry but also the modern trailblazers who continue to shape its future. Women across the globe are now at the forefront of cannabis innovation, entrepreneurship, and advocacy, driving significant changes in how cannabis is perceived, legislated, and utilized.
Building on the rich history of women's contributions to cannabis, we now turn our attention to the voices of women from RISE Dispensaries. Women in cannabis often bring diverse perspectives, skills, and leadership qualities to the industry. They have the chance to break stereotypes, challenge gender norms, and promote inclusivity. Additionally, some women find empowerment in advocating for social equity, equal representation, and fair opportunities within the cannabis space. Overall, being a woman in the cannabis industry can involve navigating both the challenges and the opportunities that come with shaping an emerging industry.

What particularly inspires me is the dynamic creativity in the development of new products, brands, and marketing campaigns. I have worked at GTI and within the industry for 5 months!
I was interested in joining the cannabis industry because I wanted to be part of an industry that was always changing and growing for the better. I saw how much cannabis was able to help me through my own struggles with anxiety and migraines and I wanted to be able to provide knowledge to others and hopefully help them as well!
I am inspired by my coworkers! Since I started working at GTI I have learned so much about the cannabis industry that I would have never known from products to cultivation and then some. It still makes me laugh thinking at one point I thought there was someone in the back rolling joints for me. I am truly blown away by how much I have been able to learn from everyone around me every day I come to work! The industry truly changed my life not only professionally, but personally in the impact of my help. Being able to provide me with medicine that reduced the amount of pills I had to take each day has been life-changing. I am calmer and my headaches are reduced from migraines to mild headaches.
I feel empowered to be a woman in cannabis. Growing up prior to the legalization I only had men selling to me and the industry seemed very male dominated. Being a woman in a management position makes me believe in the future of this industry and excited to see how far we can grow from Brownie Mary to the Women of today!
Continue to create positions for women and keep that place open at the table!

I currently have the Weedie products on display in my house and in use every day. I love how diverse the collection is from everyday use to high-end goods! I went to school for fashion business and followed the growth of Edie Parker so watching Weedie grow and expand has been awesome and now rocking events with them in the Lounge here in Mundelein is so exciting!

Almost 6 years in cannabis and 2 years at GTI!
I found that the cannabis industry was full of really inspiring, passionate entrepreneurs, which has always been the type of person I enjoy working with most. But it was also (and arguably still is) one of the most complex areas of law given the federal illegality, so it was also a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work in a super unique and fascinating regulatory landscape.
I have always found the cannabis industry to center on health and happiness -- what could be more inspiring than that? I remember when I first came into the industry and hearing incredible stories from medical users about how cannabis brought them a level of health and comfort that was previously unimaginable for them. Recreational use as well though is about encouraging happiness and that is itself a health element. I find so much joy in hearing how the work we do every day to make this product available improves the quality of life for informed adults.
I think one of the great things about the cannabis industry is that I have not felt the need to think of my participation in those terms frequently. I have always found the cannabis industry to be very welcoming and open to including a broad range of diverse individuals and backgrounds. So many of the traditional corporate types are not comfortable taking the risk associated with an industry that is still federally illegal and that has opened so many doors for individuals that may have not been considered in a resume-to-resume comparison otherwise.
Keep fighting that stigma and do what we can to make sure medical research captures the needs of women throughout their major life events (pregnancy, post-partum, menopause, etc).

Being hired into GTI was my introduction to the cannabis industry. I’ve been with GTI for 3 years and 9 months.
Prior to GTI I worked in the holistic medicine field and was looking for a change. I wanted to be in an industry that was going to challenge me as well as nourish my craving for knowledge. Cannabis’s rapidly growing market checked all the boxes for me. I wasn’t entirely sure where to start. A friend of mine who works for my state’s Dept. of Health told me if I wanted to get into the cannabis industry RISE was great company and to keep my eye out because she knew that they would be bringing a dispensary to my area within the next few months.
The ever-changing landscape of the industry and to see how it improves the daily lives of consumers is something that is hard to find. It really helps me to find that balance of fueling my passion and great business opportunities. Both personally and professionally this past year has been awesome. I've been able to work in other stores and even in different markets. The opportunities to meet with others and learn more about the industry have been valuable for me.
Being a woman in cannabis means I'm helping to break down stigmas surrounding cannabis. A survey from 2023 stated that 66% of woman hide their cannabis consumption due to surrounding stigmas. I feel that and see it, living in a very conservative area. I want to show and represent a new cannabis consumer model. I think the fact that I'm a mother that has my kids in private schools and goes to church, there is a generalized assumption about me. When I tell people I work in the cannabis industry and I also have my medical card it's usually met with a momentary facial expression of surprise.
Cannabis is still a nascent industry comparatively to other industries. Companies are always looking to spearhead the next best thing. I think a great way to do that is to listen to a largely ignored demographic of consumers.
I always keep Doctor Solomon's 3:1 Balm on hand. It's a solid product for me especially after a long day. It helps to take away those very specific pains, particularly in an area where I start to have muscle spasms.
ACDC is my absolute favorite CBD dominate strain. It's a hard one for me find so when I do see it around, I always stock up. I'd love for people to show more appreciation towards CBD strains. Once you can talk someone into trying one, they're usually hooked. ACDC is a strain that checks all the boxes, it helps with my anxiety and pain. I'm able to use it any time of the day without having to worry if I took one hit too many.
Maitri is truly about health and their community. They are giving back to their community with an understanding that the better a community is doing, the better one's health will be. Their products carry terpenes that are cater towards common women's health issues.

Since 2019!
As a longtime recreational user in the brand development world, I was eager to provide branding impact in the cannabis industry after honing my skills across other highly regulated industries, like alcohol.
I'm inspired by those working to make cannabis accessible for all—medical & adult use—and to destigmatize cannabis usage. It has helped me find creative inspiration, de-stress & sleep through the night. I have several people in my life who have benefited from cannabis over other substances, as well as for mitigating symptoms during cancer treatment.
I believe women are under-represented in the cannabis industry, especially in leadership roles. In a male-dominated industry, it is important to me to represent the interests and needs of female-identifying cannabis users both in product development and the marketing thereof. I also think that more women in leadership roles will help continue to pave the way for women at all levels to achieve professional growth in this industry.
