Celebrate with RISE: Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

Known as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, May is a time to celebrate the historical and cultural contributions of people of Asian and Pacific Islander descent to the United States. While cannabis has been widely used in traditional Asian medicines dating back centuries, today, a new generation of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are blazing their own trail through the cannabis industry. This month we're recognizing two of our own, Ling Pyng and Misha Kieren. Breaking down stigmas and educating loved ones on the power of the plant, these RISE rockstars are an integral part of pushing cannabis into the mainstream. Join us in celebrating their contributions at RISE and beyond.

How long have you worked at GTI and in the cannabis industry? 

4+ years at GTI/cannabis industry

What sparked your interest in the cannabis industry?

I joined GTI in 2020 right as recreational use was legalized in IL. The excitement of joining a rapidly growing company (pun-intended) is what sparked my interest in the industry. I wanted to be involved with an industry that would challenge me to continue learning. The fast-paced environment is what continues to motivate me on a daily basis. Never a dull moment!

What inspires you about the cannabis industry? How has the industry made an impact on your life?

I believe in the medicinal effects of the plant and its positive impact on our patients and customers. Prior to joining GTI, I was not an avid cannabis consumer because I was not informed of the plant's healing powers. I personally experience chronic migraines and occasional back pain and I have to tell you - our products have worked wonders in providing relief. I enjoy the ever-increasing variety of products from flower to vapes to edibles to topicals.

What can the cannabis industry do to be a better ally for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders?

As a Native Hawaiian, I have witnessed the negative stigma associated with cannabis use specifically in the Hawaiian community. The industry should reinforce the positive benefits of cannabis to destigmatize the "stoner" image and normalize responsible consumption.

since September of 2021

What sparked your interest in the cannabis industry?

The cannabis industry is a constantly evolving sector, filled with intriguing twists and turns. I am fascinated by the idea of discovering solutions and help shaping the industry with a group of like-minded individuals.

What inspires you about the cannabis industry? How has the industry made an impact on your life?

I grew up in an extremely traditional home where cannabis was, and to some extent still is, viewed as a gateway drug. I am continuously expanding my knowledge about cannabis products and the health benefits they offer. Recently, I gave some of GTI products to my mother-in-law, who suffers from chronic illness, and it has significantly alleviated her pain. She has never felt more relieved.,. showcasing the "power of cannabis" at its best!

What can the cannabis industry do to be a better ally for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders?

More education, and remove the outdated stigma attached to the products.
